Sustainable Homes

Past Results and Evaluation

The Sustainable Homes Program had a commitment to continuous evaluation and review of itself in order to not only measure the changes made by participants after completing the Sustainable Homes Program, but to find ways of improving itself and challenging its participants.

It did so by asking participants to fill out an evaluation form at the end of each workshop, a free kit form if receiving a free kit (which included making commitments to undertake sustainable actions), and both a pre-program and post-program survey.

2005-6

The pilot Sustainable Homes Program was carried out in the City of Darebin from June 2005 to February 2006 with almost 300 residents and council staff.

As well as using the workshop feedback and free kit forms, the evaluation was conducted using phone and paper surveys. Please click on the titles below to download and read the reports prepared by Metropolis Research.

2007

With funding from the Victorian Government’s Sustainability Fund, the Sustainable Homes Program was launched in 2007 across Banyule, Darebin and Whittlesea Councils.

Again, the evaluation used the workshop feedback and free kit forms, as well as a post-program survey that asked participants about their behaviours before and after taking part in the program. The survey was available on-line and in paper format.

2008

In 2008 the program asked it’s “before” questions as each participant registered for the program, and then asked the “after” questions at the end of the year. Participant feedback was collected from each workshop, as was the commitments made on the free kit forms.

Please find below the final evaluation report for 2008, as well as the 2008 workshop feedback review.

Summary

All feedback and evaluation to date indicates that this program was successful in achieving its aim of supporting and making it easier for residents to take action in their homes and the homes of friends, family and neighbours to make them more sustainable. The evaluation also pointed to a number of areas and ways in which the program can be finetuned and improved.

Sustainable Homes Program Final Report 2007 - 2009

It is estimated that over the three year program, participants from 1,384 households made a number of significant savings through changing their behaviour and using the contents of their free sustainability kits, including:

  • 1,139 tonnes greenhouse gas emissions (265 cars off the road)
  • 28,973 kilolitres water (483 backyard swimming pools)
